In short
To remove hidden information from a Word, PowerPoint or Excel file, choose the file and review what it carries: author, company, comments, tracked changes, hidden slides and fonts. Tick what to remove and press Clean and download. The clean copy is checked again before you get it, and the file never leaves your browser.
An Office file says more than its pages. Word stores the name of the person who created the document and of the last person who saved it, the company from their Office licence, the template it came from, how many minutes it was edited and when it was printed. A resume adapted from a friend’s file still carries the friend’s name. A cover letter reused from a previous application may still hold the other company’s name in a comment or in a deleted sentence that tracked changes kept.
Tracked changes and comments are the most common surprise. When “Track Changes” is on, every deletion stays inside the file, and anyone who opens the review pane sees the old wording, the reviewer’s name and the date. PowerPoint presentations add hidden slides and speaker notes, which are easy to forget before sending a deck to an interview panel. Excel workbooks keep cell notes, the names of people who commented, and even the folder the file was saved from, which often contains your Windows user name.
This tool shows all of it before anything changes, then removes what you choose. Tracked changes are accepted, not just hidden: insertions stay as normal text, deleted text is gone for good, and old formatting records are dropped. It also lists the fonts the file uses and warns when one may be replaced on the recruiter’s computer, which is the usual reason a resume looks different when someone else opens it.
How to clean a Word, PowerPoint or Excel file
Step 1: Choose the file
Drop a .docx, .pptx or .xlsx file, or tap to choose one. It is opened by a Web Worker in your browser, so even a large deck does not freeze the page.
Step 2: Review what it carries
See every property with its value, the number of comments and their authors, tracked changes and who made them, hidden text, hidden slides, speaker notes, hidden sheets and the fonts used.
Step 3: Pick what to remove
Properties, comments, tracked changes, hidden text and hidden slides are ticked by default. Speaker notes are not, because you may need them to present.
Step 4: Download the clean copy
The clean file downloads with the same format and “-clean” in its name. It is opened again and checked, and the tool tells you that nothing you removed is left.
Zero-Server
Cleaned on your device, never uploaded
The file is read and rewritten by JavaScript inside this browser tab. No server receives it, and no copy is kept. That is the point of a privacy tool: sending a file to a website to remove your name from it would defeat the purpose.
The clean copy contains no trace of CareerPDF either. We do not write our name into the author, company or application fields, unlike many converters that replace your details with their own.
When to clean an Office file
- Before sending a Word resume or cover letter that a friend, mentor or career coach reviewed.
- Before sharing a presentation for a panel interview, so hidden slides and notes stay private.
- When a template or old file carries someone else’s name or company.
- Before sending a work sample in Excel that has review notes or comes from a company computer.
- When a recruiter says your resume looks broken: the font list shows which fonts their computer may not have.
Frequently asked questions
Does it change the text or layout of my document?
No. The visible content stays exactly as it is. Only the items you tick are removed: properties, comments, tracked changes (accepted), hidden text, hidden slides or speaker notes.
What does accepting tracked changes mean?
Inserted text becomes normal text, deleted text is removed for good, and formatting changes keep their new look. The result is what you see in Word with “No Markup”, without the hidden history.
Why are hidden Excel sheets not deleted?
Formulas on visible sheets often use hidden sheets, so deleting them could break your numbers. The tool lists them by name so you can review or delete them in Excel.
What do the font warnings mean?
A font that is not installed on the reader’s computer is replaced by another one, which can move lines and push text onto a new page. Fonts marked “Installed with Office” are safe. For anything else, use a standard font or send a PDF.
Can it open .doc, .ppt or .xls files?
No. Those older formats and password-protected files use a different structure. Open the file in Office, save it as .docx, .pptx or .xlsx without a password, then clean it here.
Is anything left that I should check myself?
Yes: anything visible on the pages, such as a name in the footer, and photos inserted in the document, which keep their own camera data. The tool removes hidden information, not content you can see.
Is there a size limit?
Files up to 50 MB, which covers almost every resume, letter, deck and workbook.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Samsung Internet on desktop, Android and iPhone. The file is opened in a Web Worker, so the page stays responsive on phones.
