In short
To convert a Word file to plain text, choose the .docx and the text appears in reading order, ready to copy or download. Tables and text boxes are unfolded line by line, so a two-column resume pastes cleanly into job portals. You can also get Markdown or clean HTML, and nothing is uploaded.
Many application forms ask you to paste your resume into a plain text box. Copying from Word rarely works well: tabs collapse, bullets turn into odd symbols, a two-column layout comes out with the columns mixed together, and text in text boxes or the page header is often missed entirely. Portals such as Workday, Taleo and Jadarat then show a resume that looks nothing like the one you wrote.
This tool reads the Word file itself, not the screen. It walks through the document in reading order: the page header (where most templates put the name and contact details), then each paragraph, every cell of a layout table, the text inside text boxes and shapes, and finally the footer. Lists become clean bullets or numbers, extra tabs and spaces are tidied, and Arabic paragraphs keep their right-to-left direction.
Plain text is for pasting into forms and emails. Markdown keeps headings, bold, lists and links in a light format for GitHub, notes apps and AI assistants. Clean HTML gives you simple tags with no Word styling, ready for a personal website. Small data tables, such as a list of languages and levels, stay as real tables in Markdown and HTML, while layout tables are unfolded. Pictures, charts and footnotes are left out.
How to convert Word to text
Step 1: Choose the Word file
Drop a .docx file or tap to choose it. It is unzipped and read in a Web Worker on your device.
Step 2: Pick the output
Choose plain text, Markdown or clean HTML, and whether to include the page header and footer. Switching is instant because the file is read once.
Step 3: Check the text and the ATS notes
Read the result and the word count. If your resume uses text boxes, tables or a page header, a short note explains how applicant tracking systems may read them.
Step 4: Copy or download
Copy the text in one tap, or download it as .txt (UTF-8, readable in Notepad), .md or .html.
Zero-Server
Your resume stays on your device
The document is opened and converted by JavaScript in this browser tab. It is never uploaded, and the text is not stored anywhere. Close the tab and it is gone.
Many “Word to text” sites send your file to a server for conversion. A resume holds your phone number, email and work history, so here it never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my resume look broken when I paste it into a job portal?
Text boxes, layout tables and tabs do not survive copying from Word. This tool rebuilds the text in reading order, so each section and bullet arrives on its own line.
Are tracked changes and hidden text included?
No. The text matches what Word shows with all changes accepted: deleted text and hidden text are left out, inserted text is kept.
What happens to tables?
Layout tables, such as a two-column resume, are unfolded cell by cell. Small data tables with the same number of cells in each row stay as tables in Markdown and HTML, and as rows separated by a bar in plain text.
Does it include the header and footer?
Yes, by default, because many resumes keep the name and contact details there. Untick the option to leave them out.
Does it work with Arabic documents?
Yes. Arabic text is kept in its correct order, and right-to-left paragraphs are marked as such in HTML.
Can it convert Word to PDF?
No, and you do not need a website for that. In Word choose File, Save As, PDF, or in Google Docs choose File, Download, PDF. Your fonts and layout stay exact and nothing is uploaded. Then open the PDF in the ATS resume checker to see what a robot reads. This tool reads .docx files, so save an old .doc as .docx first.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Samsung Internet on desktop, Android and iPhone. JavaScript must be enabled because the file is read on your device.
Which format should I paste into a job portal?
Plain text. Portals do not understand Markdown or HTML tags and show them as typed, while plain text keeps only lines and bullets, which every ATS reads without trouble.
