What employers look for

Hiring managers for accounting roles look for accuracy, ownership of the month-end close and a clear sense of which standards and systems you work with. Name them: IFRS or local GAAP, the ERP you use daily, and the size of the ledgers or entities you handled.

Numbers are your strongest argument. Instead of “responsible for reconciliations”, show how many accounts you reconciled, how much faster the close became, or how much money an error you caught would have cost.

If you are applying across the Gulf, mention experience with VAT systems in the region and any work with multinational or group reporting. Employers there often hire accountants who can handle several entities and currencies, so show the number of companies, branches or currencies you reconciled.

ATS keywords to include

Use the ones that truly match your experience, in the same words as the job ad.

  • general ledger
  • journal entries
  • reconciliation
  • IFRS
  • accruals
  • VAT
  • audit support
  • cash flow
  • financial statements
  • ERP

Achievement bullets you can adapt

  • Shortened the month-end close from 9 to 5 working days by standardising journal templates and reconciliation checklists.
  • Reconciled 42 bank accounts across 3 entities every month with zero unresolved items at audit.
  • Identified duplicate supplier payments worth JOD 18,000 and recovered the full amount within one quarter.
  • Prepared quarterly VAT returns for 2 companies with no penalties in four years.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing duties without numbers. Every bullet should show volume, speed or value.
  • Hiding software skills. Many accounting job ads filter on the ERP name, so write it exactly.
  • Using abbreviations only. Write “International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)” once so both people and ATS recognise it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include certifications like CPA, ACCA or CMA?

Yes. Put completed certifications next to your degree, and write “in progress” with the expected date for ones you are still studying. Recruiters often filter on them.

How long should an accountant resume be?

One page is enough for up to about eight years of experience. Senior roles with several entities or audits can use two.

Should I write my salary history?

No. Keep salary out of the resume and discuss it later in the process.

Is this template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses one column, standard headings and real text, so applicant tracking systems can read every line.
