What employers look for

Engineering managers skim for three things: what you built, how big it was, and what changed because of it. A list of frameworks alone says little; “reduced API latency by 60% for 2 million monthly users” says a lot.

Match the stack in the job ad honestly. If the role asks for TypeScript and PostgreSQL and you use them, make sure those exact words appear in your skills and in at least one bullet.

Tailor the top third of the page to each application. A backend role should see APIs, databases and scale first; a frontend role should see frameworks, accessibility and performance first. Reordering three bullets and your skills line takes five minutes and makes the match obvious to both the ATS and the hiring manager.

Technical skills

  • TypeScript / JavaScript
  • React or another front-end framework
  • Node.js, Python or Go
  • SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • REST and GraphQL APIs
  • Cloud (AWS, GCP or Azure)
  • CI/CD and automated testing
  • System design

Soft skills

  • Ownership
  • Code review and mentoring
  • Clear technical writing
  • Working with product and design

ATS keywords to include

Use the ones that truly match your experience, in the same words as the job ad.

  • microservices
  • API
  • scalability
  • unit testing
  • CI/CD
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • performance
  • agile
  • code review

Achievement bullets you can adapt

  • Reduced p95 API latency from 820 ms to 310 ms by adding caching and rewriting 6 hot queries.
  • Led the migration of a monolith to 5 services, cutting deployment time from 40 minutes to 8.
  • Raised automated test coverage from 35% to 80%, halving production incidents over two quarters.
  • Mentored 3 junior engineers; two were promoted within a year.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A skills section with 40 technologies. List what you can discuss confidently in an interview.
  • Describing tasks (“worked on the backend”) instead of outcomes.
  • Two-column designs with icons and progress bars, which many ATS read in the wrong order.

Frequently asked questions

Should I add GitHub or a portfolio link?

Yes, if it shows real, recent work. Put it in the contact line next to your email.

How do I show impact if I don’t have exact numbers?

Use reasonable estimates and scale: number of users, requests per day, team size or time saved. Be ready to explain how you measured them.

Do I need a summary?

A two-sentence summary helps when you change specialisation, for example from front-end to full-stack. Otherwise keep it short.

Is this template ATS-friendly?

Yes. Single column, standard headings and selectable text.
