What employers look for

Employers want to know which side of electrical engineering you work in: building MEP design, power distribution, substations, industrial maintenance or renewable energy. Say it in your title line and summary, then prove it with projects.

Show the scale and standards of your work. Voltage levels, load sizes, project values and the codes you designed to, such as IEC, NEC or local authority regulations, tell a recruiter immediately whether you fit.

Safety and testing matter as much as design. Mention commissioning, testing and handover experience, permit-to-work systems and any incident-free records, because many electrical roles combine office and site work.

Technical skills

  • Power distribution design
  • Load calculations and cable sizing
  • ETAP and DIALux
  • AutoCAD Electrical
  • LV and MV switchgear
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Protection and earthing systems
  • IEC and local authority codes

Soft skills

  • Safety awareness
  • Coordination with other trades
  • Problem solving under pressure
  • Clear technical reporting

Professional summary examples by experience level

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the details with your own.

Entry level

Electrical engineering graduate with a graduation project on solar PV design and site training with an MEP contractor. Skilled in AutoCAD and load calculations, and eager to grow in design or site roles.

Mid level

Electrical engineer with 7 years of experience in MEP design and power distribution for high-rise and industrial projects. Uses ETAP and DIALux daily and has commissioned more than 30 MV and LV panels.

Senior

Lead electrical engineer with 15 years of experience managing design teams for airports, hospitals and substations up to 132 kV. Reviews contractor submittals, signs off designs and mentors engineers.

How to match your resume to the job ad and ATS

  1. Identify the sector in the ad, such as buildings MEP, utilities, oil and gas, industrial maintenance or solar, and put that sector in your title line.
  2. Copy the ad’s software and standards names exactly: ETAP, DIALux, AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP, IEC 60364 or local authority regulations.
  3. For each project, add voltage level, load, area or value, plus your exact role, such as design, supervision or commissioning.
  4. If the ad asks for licences or memberships, place them in the summary and the education section so the ATS finds them twice.

ATS keywords to include

Use the ones that truly match your experience, in the same words as the job ad.

  • electrical design
  • MEP
  • load schedule
  • single line diagram
  • ETAP
  • switchgear
  • commissioning
  • earthing
  • lighting design
  • IEC standards

Achievement bullets you can adapt

  • Designed the power distribution for a 22-floor mixed-use tower with a 4.5 MVA connected load, approved by the authority on first submission.
  • Ran short-circuit and load-flow studies in ETAP for 3 industrial plants, reducing transformer oversizing and saving USD 120,000.
  • Led testing and commissioning of 38 MV and LV panels with zero safety incidents and handover two weeks ahead of schedule.
  • Cut lighting energy use by 35% in a school retrofit by redesigning layouts in DIALux and switching to LED with occupancy sensors.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing “electrical works” without saying whether you designed, supervised, tested or maintained them.
  • Leaving out voltage levels, loads and project values, which are the fastest way to show your level.
  • Listing software without a result. Pair ETAP, DIALux or AutoCAD with what you designed or calculated.

Before you send your application

Engineering employers usually ask for your degree, engineering council membership and experience letters. Keep clear PDF scans ready, and prepare a one-page project list if the ad asks for one.

If the portal limits file size, compress the PDF. If it accepts only one file, merge them into one PDF with your resume first.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my engineering council membership?

Yes. Many employers in the region require it. Write the council, the membership grade and the year, for example in your education section.

How do I show both design and site experience?

Split bullets under each job: design deliverables first, then site results such as commissioning, inspections and handover dates.

Is renewable energy experience worth highlighting?

Yes. Solar PV and energy efficiency projects are in growing demand. Give the system size in kWp or MW and your role.

Is this template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses one column, standard headings and real text, so applicant tracking systems can read every line.

How long should an electrical engineer resume be?

One page for up to about seven years of experience; two pages for senior engineers with many projects.

Should I list every standard I know?

List the standards you actually designed to and the ones the job ad names. A short, accurate list is stronger than a long one.
